Restless spirits

Restless spirits surround our jack-o-lantern on Halloween night

A night when mysteries are illuminated, do you believe?  On this night, when summer reaches its end, its bounties spent, the veil between the spirit world and ours grows thin.  Summer breathes its last, its children perish, too delicate to resist the grim crush of winter’s step.  Its triumph over light and warmth is inevitable, stealthily bringing death to the earth in the simple forms of darkness and frost.

In the face of it, we helplessly don masks and carve jack-o’-lanterns, hoping to propitiate and resist the powers of night.  We wish to remain unnoticed.  Yet restless are the spirits so cut off from sunny earth and its joys.
