It’s a shame that community-gardening has never gained a foothold on Chicago’s north side. When Bob and I are out in Michigan, we go to this beautiful community garden near the Chickaming Prairie just to look at the plots and see what’s growing.
I’m reminded of visiting a friend many years ago, who lived in the Washington Heights district of Washington DC. He took me to see his garden, which to my amazement lay in a sizable community garden just a short distance from the National Cathedral. To dig in the dirt there, with the enormous church visible on the horizon, was positively medieval. To this day I wonder, if wealthy Washington Heights has community plots, why don’t we? It would do so much for the soul, and the body.
