Zoo-goers are thrilled with the Lincoln Park Zoo’s new baby rhino. The 2-month-old calf, named King, was born at the zoo and has been on view since September 17. Sixty pounds at birth, King already weighs around 200 pounds.
Still, he is much lighter on his feet than his mother, Kapuki. The little rhino wags his tail and gambols around. King’s father, Maku, who is 27, also lives at the zoo.
King’s birth has worldwide significance as poaching has reduced the global population of eastern black rhinos to under 5,000. According to the UK’s Daily Mail, his birth caps a five-year effort on the part of zoologists to encourage Maku and Kapuki to reproduce.
If you happen to be anywhere near the zoo, it is well worth stopping by to see King. It’s free. According to a zoo volunteer, the best time to view the rhinos is between 11 and 2.

A totally great picture! I actually saw that rhino on Sunday just around 2:00pm ! When it came out from the indoor “house,” it was shy at first, but then followed his mom around the outdoor enclosure. You are right, King is lite on his feet.

It’s bizarre to see a rhinoceros scampering around like a puppy.

so pre-historic looking–part of what makes seeing a young one so fun.
