It’s where Chicago works toward transcendence. Only from afar can we see the magnitude of all we’ve accomplished yet appreciate the trivialities that distract us every day. May Chicago rediscover the resources and inspiration that made her great, and that are needed, now more than ever, to avert her decline.

So, from where did you shoot this? At first I thought it was O’Hare – then realized that’s the lake and the skyline is flipped. Indiana?
Celia says
yes–from the top of one of the dunes in the national lakeshore.

OK, that makes perfect sense. Though it’s too cold to be up there these days…

I was there Saturday, which was sunny and not too breezy, so that by the time I reached the top of the dune (at the end of a 2-mile trail), I didn’t need gloves, or the coat I was wearing. I wasn’t even planning to take pictures, actually; it never occurred to me that the city would be so visible from there. What, 20 miles?
Encountered some other hikers coming down from the lookout who were carrying tripods. They knew.
The off-season is a good time to go out to the Dunes because there are fewer people. In the next few months, there will be many photographers out there because of the bird migrations and the wildflowers. . . . then in the summer there will be scads of people there for the beaches and sun.

Beautiful shot, great skyline view. Still need to explore the Indiana dunes. That view will get me there even faster. 🙂

I’m just getting to know the Indiana dunes myself. There is so much out there to see!
Thanks for writing in, elatlboy–I like your blog.

Great photo—I like the contrast between “civilization” and then the vastness of lake and sky !!!……..I’ve been fortunate enough to have climbed atop a dune or two as well; even though the way is always steep, the reward of the views is wonderful and worth it all.

I agree; few efforts are more rewarding than climbing a dune, especially here in the Midwest where there are so few lookouts.
