Our friends Jeff and Elena came over for dinner last night and brought these amazing pastries to complete our meal.
The skinny suit
The after-lunch crowd from Kinzie Chophouse returning to work at the Merchandise Mart. The skinny suit is in, a refreshing look for men.
The Chicago that floats
From Diversey Harbor, Chicago resolves itself into two worlds, one grounded, the other watery.
Cartwheeling
Despite Celia’s lack of a modernist sensibility, her appreciation of certain modernist works has increased with time.
Home
Coming home to Chicago from the plains can be jarring, especially on a dim and rainy day.
Iowa horizon
Today we took off from Chicago, heading out to Des Moines by car. It was a great day for driving. I absolutely love looking at Iowa farm fields. The terrain and the speed create scenes that are hypnotizing. The textures, the forms, the colors. . . wow!
We must cultivate our garden
Imagine peace in this world!
Courtyard building
The courtyard buildings in my neighborhood are beautiful at this time of year. I love seeing the thriving plantings with their pops of color, everything primped like a human beauty. Here’s a red-brick one, too.
Summer parkstrip on Oakdale
The 500 block of West Oakdale is one of my favorites, partly because of these wonderful old brick row houses that, because of their white paint, seem like they belong in Washington, DC. I think these are some of the oldest attached houses in my vicinity, dating back to the early 1890s.
Now we know
Moving a blog is possible but hair-raising. The worst is over. The essentials are in place, leaving only some fine-tuning.
The five o’clock march
One of the most blessed hours of the day is five o’clock, when workers stream out into the city streets, liberated from their jobs. The sunlight floats down along the endless facade of a pillared bank, intersecting with each tread, whether heavy or light.
Great Lake swim lane
Swimmers stroke the summer waters of Lake Michigan, in the designated lane running along the Drive from above Navy Pier. To be a distance swimmer in a Great Lake is no small thing.
