It’s a shame that community-gardening has never gained a foothold on Chicago’s north side. When Bob and I are out in Michigan, we go to this beautiful community garden near the Chickaming Prairie just to look at the plots and see what’s growing.
I’m reminded of visiting a friend many years ago, who lived in the Washington Heights district of Washington DC. He took me to see his garden, which to my amazement lay in a sizable community garden just a short distance from the National Cathedral. To dig in the dirt there, with the enormous church visible on the horizon, was positively medieval. To this day I wonder, if wealthy Washington Heights has community plots, why don’t we? It would do so much for the soul, and the body.

That is a mighty fine picture of the sun-flowers ! I always enjoy seeing their large sunny “faces.” People usually do plant them in or around gardens for decorative purposes. Isn’t Chickaming out near Union Pier? I travel out there sometimes and will need to check out the community garden plots.

I discovered the other days that sunflowers are ancient and have been planted in the Americas for many centuries. I simply love them!
The Chickaming gardens are really beautiful and easy to get to. They are about a mile east of the “Red Arrow Highway” on Warren Woods Road. After crossing over the interstate, look to the right and you will see them. Take the first right that you can: you will be at the gardens and the Chickaming Prairie!
