As far as I can tell, the underside of the Bean at the very center is convex rather than concave, so that if you stand at the very center underneath and look up, you see a slightly convex reflection of the people standing on the ground, encircled by the other “funhouse” reflections and the light and shadow from outside.
I took the “straightest” picture that I could (though I never take straight pictures) and then increased the saturation of the color in Photoshop and “pointellized” the image slightly. That’s what makes it look nubbly and surreal, rather than overly photojournalistic.
