Safety is subjective.
When I walk through this pedestrian tunnel I have an unnerving sensation, as though something has gone wrong, or is about to. The white paint and overly bright light are meant to banish any trace of the criminal or criminality (even if the trace is as harmless as a bit of graffiti). Yet the measures somehow have the opposite effect. I feel that I am about to be interrogated. The shadows just beyond the end of the tunnel creep me out, too.

I’ve never seen a pedestrian tunnel. My first thought was, there’s no graffiti, how unusual.

Right; and I guess the bright light is meant to ensure that it stays like this. There are many such foot tunnels for crossing under Lake Shore Drive to get to the Lake. Not all look like this, though. Some are visibly dank and decrepit, with wooden struts to keep them from falling down. . . .There are also many tunnels under the Drive that both local traffic and pedestrians use. Some of these are decorated with mosaics and murals (and graffiti, too).

I often feel “the creeps” when I am in one of those tunnels too………….

It’s lucky lots of bikers and joggers are usually around.
