Vogue Fabrics is an amazing store! I happened to be there a few weeks ago and just couldn’t believe how thorough the offerings were. I think the place had five rooms, all of them stuffed with inventory of all kinds and colors. Bolts and bolts of fabrics, silk, cotton, wool, etc, etc; and the colors–absolutely amazing. Anyway I did notice the button section and the display was impressive.

It’s a Chicago institution. Fewer American girls are learning to sew, but there are still thousands of women in ethnic neighborhoods carrying on with sewing. I am glad my mother taught me this skill when I was a girl. Even if you don’t end up sewing in adulthood, it teaches you to appreciate how good clothes are made.
