It must be fall, because I’m suddenly frequenting the cafés that I’ve shunned for months. I’m craving the soups and lattes that just a week ago were unappealing. So I was receptive when a friend suggested we meet at Toni Patisserie, a little place located in the northeast corner of the Pittsfield Building, across the street from the Cultural Center.
I like this place even though I don’t really know much about its food. It’s just a pleasant, low-key French-style bakery, where you can also get decent soups and very nice salads. And now a glass of wine, if you’d like to.
One of the best things about this spot is its location, on Washington, just a few paces off Michigan Avenue. It’s preferable to the many hard-used chain restaurants and bland and odd eateries in the Loop, that I sometimes wish would just disappear.

I’ve walked by this place like 100 times and never been in! Maybe I’ll stop in for a coffee next time I’m in the area

Hey, Andrew–i’ve heard there are something like 14,000 restaurants in the city, not counting the hot dog stands, etc, or bars. . . . the true denizen, who knows every one, has got to be rare.

I used to frequent the Pittsfield building when my dentist had an office in it. I always liked the
elegance of the design. Next time I’m in the area will check out that eatery.

I also used to frequent the Pittsfield when my dentist was there. Have been to Toni’s only once but liked it. I’m definitely in favor of supporting charming, independent restaurants in the Loop!

The Pittsfield used to be filled with dentists and therapists, giving everyone I knew a reason to go there. Some years ago, the building was rehabbed; it might even be condos now. The patisserie makes the building more attractive; it’s really quite nice.

Well, put, H–the interior is elegant and impressive–wish the management would do something a bit more inspired with the atrium lobby.
